DSLNG Encourages Luwuk University Students to Strengthen Youth Participation in Maleo Bird Conservation
DSLNG, in collaboration with the Central Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), organized a campaign and awareness program titled "The Maleo Bird as Sulawesi's Heritage for Indonesia and the World" at Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk on Tuesday (28 July 2026), as part of its efforts to raise awareness among young people about the importance of conserving the Maleo, an endangered bird species endemic to Sulawesi. The event brought together university students, the Banggai Regency Government through the Environmental Agency, academics, the Luwuk Iguana Community, and various stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in protecting biodiversity. During the program, participants received presentations on the Maleo's conservation status, the threats facing its natural habitat, ongoing conservation initiatives, and the vital role of local communities and young generations in safeguarding Sulawesi's endemic wildlife. Relations and Communication Senior Manager of DSLNG, Aji Wihardandi, emphasized that university students play a strategic role as agents of change in educating the public and promoting wildlife conservation. As part of its long-term sustainability commitment, DSLNG has partnered with the Central Sulawesi BKSDA since 2012 through various Maleo conservation programs, including establishing Indonesia's first ex situ Maleo Conservation Center within the DSLNG plant area and successfully releasing 127 Maleo chicks into their natural habitat. The event concluded with a joint conservation pledge, symbolizing the participants' shared commitment to preserving one of Sulawesi's most valuable natural treasures for future generations.
